Help! Film Crew Needed in Summit County

Well, I might be getting my big break, but I need your help. An independent publishing comapny has offered to produce my ski fitness video. The caveat: They don't have the budget to send a crew to Colorado, but they do have a "small" budget if I can find a local crew. Anyone know anyone who knows someone? Send them my way!

Thanks!

The Liberation of Snowboard Outreach Society

This winter, I will be the first two-planker to become a mentor for the Snowboard Outreach Society
You can read more about them on their website, but basically, the program involves taking kids at risk and teaching them basic values. This values are applied throughout their five days on the snow. This will be the first year that they will be adding skiing. In order to maintain their ski passes, the kids must complete a certain number of hours of community service. We began this past Saturday by participating in Make a Difference Day in Frisco. My team helped clean up one of the trails. Throughout the season, I will hopefully get my group involved with projects for the Backstage Theatre and the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance. Check this blog regularly for details.

The Diva Web of Fame

What a nice birthday present! I have been inducted into the Diva Web of Fame
This got me thinking. There is a guy on a message forum that likes to wax poetic about his hatred of Baby Boomers. This gentleman would have you believe that all of the evils of the world were caused by people of the Boomer generation. I say hogwash, but I wonder what would inspire such hatred, Then, I realized that those of us who were born during the Boomer years have a distinct quality: We refuse to act our age! Is this a bad thing? No way! As boomers, we are a generation that strives to continually reinvent ourselves, even when others would prefer if we stayed stagnant...
But who cares what others would prefer. So, to all other Boomer Divas out there: Shine On!

BOLERO-RAVEL

Guess I'm having a musical Monday! Ravel's Bolero plays an important part in Reflections. In the opening sequence, Mariel is walking her dog, and she here's this music. It's actually the ring tone on her cell phone. The call she receives is rather distressing, but I won't give away the story.

Later on, the music appears again as the background to a video that inspires her to make some major changes in her life.

Later on, the music

Eric Clapton - Layla (live)

Also from the imaginary "soundtrack" to Reflections in the Snow. Mariel tells her ski instructor that she hums the instrumental to this song to keep her skiing fluid. Try it. It works!

Colorado Ski Instruction

Aside from the great terrain, fantastic nightlife and long ski season in Summit County Colorado, we have some of the best ski instructors in North America. Why is this so? The answer can be summed up in one word: Dedication.

In fact, some instructors even attend training sessions when they are not on the job. Take a look at the some of the things Colorado instructors do to enhance their teaching techniques:

Celebrate the Kingdom of Breckenridge

"Celebrate 148-years of Breckenridge history during this two-day event. Founded in 1859, Breckenridge was inadvertently left off the official U.S. maps and became known as “Colorado’s Kingdom” until 1936 when it was finally incorporated. Kingdom days will celebrate this aspect of Breckenridge’s history as well as gold fields and mining, exploration and adventure, brothels and saloons, booms and busts."

As a tour guide for the Breckenridge Historical Alliance, I have hired some of Summit County and Denver's best actors to participate in a series of historical reenactments on June 16th. Come join the fun!

Moved By the Mountains

As I awaken each morning and go to my window, I wonder what the mountains will wear today. They like to change their colors with their mood. Sometimes they dress in purple. At times they dress in green. As autumn approaches, the aspens turn golden, reflecting the bright Colorado sun. They embellish the mountain like ornaments on a Christmas tree, reminding the locals that winter, their favorite season, is on its way. Then, surprise, Santa comes early, and we get a September sprinkling of snow. The town reverberates with joy and anticipation.

As night falls, the colors of daylight blend slowly with the darker colors of the night. I am living in a watercolor painting. But this painting is my reality.

Welcome to Summit County Colorado.

It had not always been this way. Most of my life has been spent entrenched in the grayness of cities. I grew up riding subways, talking street talk, in the heart of New York City. I was raised in a city that never sleeps. Neither did I, for the most part. I used to think that this was normal. I knew the score. I’m a native New Yorker.

As a freelancer, I spent a good deal of time underground, in the bowels of the city. A few times a day I would descend into the underworld surrounded by some of the most peculiar specimens of humanity.

Once I thought I'd never leave New York. When it became too stressful, I settled for Boston, but while living in Boston I learned to ski. The rest, as they say, is history.

In July of 2004, the mountains decided to move me. They enticed me with the promise of a kinder, gentler life, seduced me with an invitation to feel the ever-present sensuality of existence that city dwellers rarely experience. They knew that this is where I'm healthy. This is where I'm happy.

Have you been moved by the mountains? Do you dream of living in Summit County. Frisco realtor Joanne Hanson can make that dream come true.

Colorado: Off Slope and Off Season

I came for the winters, but stayed for the summers. That's what Summit County residents say about this area. Right now, there's still a bit of skiing going on, but there are plenty of off-slope activities that you might enjoy. Here's what's happening at Colorado ski areas:

Putting Your Passsion Into Print

If you peruse the Internet, you will notice a multitude of blogs about sports and fitness. While some of them are written for educational purposes, others are simply the musings of people who have experienced significant personal growth by participating in a sport or a new fitness routine. The blogs at Dreamtime Publishing are an excellent example. Take a look:

http://dreamtimepublishing.com/blog/

In a sense, a blog is a journal, albeit a journal that can be shared with the world. How cool is that? Whether you decide to write a blog, or merely keep a journal, there is something deeply satisfying about writing about your escapades in fitness or in sport. Why? If you look back at your writings, you might notice a correlation between what you were learning in your sport or fitness routine, and what is going on in your life. Sometimes, you will have an almost uncanny observation: As your skill in your chosen activity has progressed, so has your personal growth. Writing about fitness and sport is also an excellent way to track changes in your health, or your tendency towards injury. What type of activities were you doing before you tore your ACL? What was lacking in you fitness routine? What was receiving too much attention? Were you stretching or weight training too much without putting enough emphasis on balance? Were you skiing or riding on trails that were beyond you ability? The proof is in the printing.

Fitness or sport can be a catalyst for change. Look at me. I was once the quintessential New York City girl. Then I learned to ski. Now I live here, and I rarely visit big noisy cities. After learning to ski, I also became a writer, and even acted in a few shows. However, before I learned to ski, I had adjusted my workout routine to focus less on strength and more on balance exercise. In every sense of the word, I became a more balanced person. Looking book on my writing about skiing and fitness, I notice that I was periodically reinventing myself. My writing has been my Rosetta Stone of my personal evolution.

Sometimes, a writing hobby eventually evolves into a profitable side profession.

On May 1st from 6:00-8:00 PM, Mountain Sport Fitness will conduct a workshop on writing about fitness and sport. For details, call 970-668-1595
